Chances

I wrote “Chances” thinking about whirlwind romances. Sometimes, people expect that things will happen, especially when it comes to life changing moments like falling in love. But the thing most people ignore is that it takes at least one person to take action. Otherwise, you have missed chances and non-existent romances.

And while this is something that definitely connects to romantic endeavors, the message is supposed to extend into other areas of life: we can’t sit around expecting thing to change for us (well you can, but you probably won’t get what it is that you want).

This idea also links to the broader themes and ideas I explore on the album, I’ll Be Gone, You’ll Be Gone, in that we shouldn’t expect things to work out without being proactive. Whether it’s about resisting oppression, calling truth to power, or getting involved in community support networks, all change is the result of action – and the more people who take action, the better.
